Paper lids are recommended when the buyer wants a consistent kraft or white paper packaging appearance , EU SUPD compliance. PET dome lids are suitable when product visibility is important for chilled salads, supermarket display, and grab-and-go food programs. Since 2021, the EU’s Single-Use Plastics Directive (SUPD) has placed bans on certain single-use plastic items—such as plates, cups, cutlery, and food containers—to reduce environmental impacts — EU SUPD compliance.  Under the SUPD, any packaging made wholly or partly from plastic—even if compostable—may be considered under the ban unless meeting specific exemptions — EU SUPD compliance. However, the regulatory environment is evolving. The EU’s newly proposed Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) aims to replace current directives by 2030, with more ambitious requirements on recyclability, reuse, and bans on unnecessary packaging.

PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances) have been used in packaging to provide water- and grease-resistance, but due to their toxicity and environmental persistence, they are being phased out in North America. For 2026, PFAS-free certification is a legal requirement in many states, including California and New York.
