1. When did PPWR start to apply to foodservice packaging?
Regulation (EU) 2025/40 has generally applied since 12 August 2026. However, individual PPWR requirements have different application dates, transitional provisions, delegated acts, or implementing-act dependencies. Buyers should therefore review the relevant requirement rather than assuming every PPWR obligation became mandatory on the same day.
2. Does PPWR restrict PFAS in food-contact packaging?
Yes. Article 5(5) PFAS limits for food-contact packaging have applied since 12 August 2026. The limits include 25 ppb for an individual targeted PFAS, 250 ppb for the sum of targeted PFAS, and 50 ppm for PFAS including polymeric PFAS. The European Commission’s 2026 guidance recommends a stepwise verification approach beginning with Total Fluorine screening.

5. Are compostable products automatically PPWR compliant?
No. Compostability does not automatically establish PPWR compliance.
